The first step is to identify your starter.
In most cases, the year, make, model,
engine size, and transmission type is
all we need. In some cases, a starter
number will be needed and it can be
found on the side of the starter.
Remove the starter and place it in
a vise or similar device as shown
in the picture to the left.

Remove the solenoid cover as shown
in the picture to the left.
Remove the plunger assembly and
place aside. Make sure the spring
stays in place!
Remove the left nut and then pull
the stud with the contact on it
from the starter.

Gently tap on worn contact while
resting the end of the stud on a
solid surface.
Install new contact with stud and
insulators and gently tighten with
nut. Ensure that all parts are lining
up as you tighten the nut. Some
exterior insulators have alignment
pegs that are easily broken. Take
your time with this step!

Remove the starter lead and repeat
the process on the opposite side. Keep
in mind that the stud is not pressed into
this contact and it has to be removed
first and then slide the contact out from
behind the solenoid terminal.
DO NOT excessively bend this terminal
as it is relatively easy to break. Use an
open end wrench to turn the stud on
the inside to adjust contacts if needed.
Install replacement plunger assembly and
check for smooth movement. Also check
that all contact surfaces are laying parallel.

Plunger should have smooth up and
down movement after installed.
Although they are rarely worn, if
your starter has a lot of mileage
on it or if it were excessively oily,
the brushes should be inspected
for wear.
Replace the cap and test the starter
for proper operation. Reinstall the
starter and you are finished.
